Adaptive Testing
Standard CAT adjusts question difficulty based on Item Response Theory (IRT). SmarterTesting's Double Adaptive engine goes further — adapting on two simultaneous dimensions: difficulty and content domain coverage.
The Oxford University Partnership
Built in direct collaboration with psychometricians from Oxford University — applying decades of academic research in measurement theory. When we make claims about our adaptive methodology, we can evidence them. Our technical documentation meets the standards of regulatory scrutiny and academic peer review.
After every response, the engine recalculates the candidate's estimated ability (θ) using a 3-Parameter Logistic IRT model. The next item maximises Fisher information at the current θ estimate — ensuring each question contributes maximum measurement precision.
Simultaneously, the engine tracks syllabus coverage and enforces configurable domain constraints — preventing the scenario where a very strong or weak candidate receives a test unrepresentative of the full curriculum. Critical for regulators and awarding bodies.
